Alzheimer's Association Poster

Event and Issue

The Rita Hayworth Gala, held in New York City, is an annual event sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association. Social leaders of NYC are invited to a night of dining, dancing and entertainment as they campaign the fight against Alzheimer's disease. Several influential individuals who have supported and impacted the Alzheimer’s Association or the fight against Alzheimer’s will also be honored. So far, the New York Rita Hayworth Gala has raised more than $30 million for the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. I chose this event because I thought it was a unique and classy way to give voice to a disease that is often overlooked.

Visual Message

The poster looks formal and classy, reflecting the anticipated atmosphere of the gala.

Audience

Because the Rita Hayworth Gala is intended for Manhattan’s elite, this poster is designed for prominent individuals in NYC, especially businessmen and celebrities. Therefore, this poster will probably be found in the buildings and offices of those intended people. It will be less likely to be found in magazines because the gala is not open to the entire general public.

Design Strategy

The Rita Hayworth Gala is a black-tie event, which implies a formal atmosphere. I wanted to make this point clear by using a tie as my main visual. The gala is also intended for the elite, so I chose to keep the poster simple and sophisticated. Doing so also emphasizes the fact that the gala is a formal and classy event. The gold tie clip is decorated with the logo of the Alzheimer's Association so that the attending parties will know what this gala is benefiting. Most of the poster is colored in different shades of purple, which is the color that represents the Alzheimer’s Association. I chose the font Charme for my event title because it has a classic feel to it that reminds the audience of events like galas. Baskerville Old Face, the font used for my display type, also looks very classic and sophisticated, and balances nicely with the rest of the poster so that it does not dominate the page. I chose the font Baskerville Cyrillic LT Std for the rest of the information on the poster because it is very similar to the display type.

Style Sheet

Display Type: Baskerville Old Face; 65/78; kerning: -10; tracking: 0

Event Title: Charme Std Roman; 48/57.6; metrics kerning; tracking: 0

Event Information & Website: Baskerville Cyrillic LT Std; 14/16.8; metrics kerning; tracking: 0

Extras: Color

Instead of coloring the tie black, I chose to use two different shades of purple, which is the color that represents the Alzheimer's Association. The dark purple background, which looks almost black, is meant to be a reminder of the night when the gala is held. The use of the different shades of purple throughout the entire poster is a subtle reminder that the gala is held to support the Alzheimer's Association.

  1. This poster is very pleasing to the eye- it's simple and the color combination works great. I love the little tie clip of the organization, that made it unique.

  2. "A Night to Remember" is the perfect tag line for an Alzheimer's event; it can be quirky, sentimental or comedic depending the viewer. This is also a perfect example of how more is less. With its simplicity in design it communicates a clear message to its audience. I think the gold item on the tie is the perfect added touch of detail. My only inquiry is if your tag line is in New Times Roman? If so, I wonder if a font less popularly used might stand out better?
