Entertainment Weekly Grids

Grids, as we discussed in class yesterday, can be tweaked in various ways that don't immediately suggest that a grid system is utilized. Entertainment Weekly's Web site, however, makes it clear that a structured grid is extremely important (and very apparent to its audience).

When we looked at examples from EW in print, a functional, basic grid could be mapped out. On the Web, their formula is even more strict and simple.

The content is placed within a 6-column grid with the text taking up 3 columns total. Everything fits within these columns. Nothing deviates from the format (i.e. no main feature takes up 3 columns). So, in order to create a hierarchy, the information is ordered vertically from most to least important. As you scroll down the site, each section is ordered by what the editors want you to read first as well as a color scheme that separates the pieces.

Entertainment Weekly's site seems unconventional because the current trend is to call out the "biggest" story with large, bold type and eye-catching images. Instead, they let their grid direct the flow of information.
